Not only pigeons: avian olfactory navigation studied by satellite telemetry

چکیده
The olfactory navigation hypothesis proposed to explain homing pigeon predicts that birds learn the association of wind directions and wind-borne odours at home, once displaced, determine home direction on basis local environmental release site. This was two kinds empirical observations: (i) pigeons develop navigational abilities only if exposed winds loft, (ii) anosmic displaced unfamiliar sites are unable home. Soon after discovery role olfaction in about 50 years ago, became a subject hot scientific debate. Until beginning GPS era, large body evidence support pigeons, swifts starlings consisted mainly vanishing bearings performance data. use GPS, allowing observation pigeons’ behaviour en route provided further compelling cues navigation. development wildlife telemetry past decades produced strong cues, also some species wild birds. Wild artificially both during migration, or incubation showed impaired capacities compensate displacements deprived their sense smell. Contrariwise, satellite failed find any validation for existence map based magnetic tested species. In spite fact nature has not yet been elucidated, miniaturisation technology will hopefully allow us near future investigate detail features found species, clarify sensory free-ranging small passerines.

Homing pigeons use olfactory cues for navigation in england
Although the use of olfactory cues in pigeon navigation is well established, the generality of olfactory navigation remains uncertain because of apparent variability in results gained by different researchers in different regions. We report the results of the first experiments investigating the effect of anosmia on homing pigeons reared in a previously uninvestigated region, southern England. I...

This research presents computational models to represent visual navigation mechanisms which guide pigeons (Columba Livia) during flight. A 3D graphics computer simulator was developed to model autonomous flight in virtual pigeons. The aim was to investigate the role of (i) visual landmarks (ii) flocking with other pigeons and (iii) image familiarity in pigeon navigation. A recursive processing ...
متن کاملSynchronous monitoring of vulture movements with satellite telemetry and avian radar
Radar and satellite global positioning system-platform transmitter terminal (GPSPTT) transmitters provide complementary information on the movements and behaviors of individual birds. The GPS-PTT tag provides a snapshot of altitude and location of a specific individual of an identified species at predefined intervals. The history of the individual is known because each transmitter has a unique ...
متن کاملNavigation-induced ZENK expression in the olfactory system of pigeons (Columba livia).
A large body of evidence indicates that pigeons use olfactory cues to navigate over unfamiliar areas with a differential contribution of the left and right hemispheres. In particular, the right nostril/olfactory bulb (OB) and left piriform cortex (Cpi) have been demonstrated to be crucially involved in navigation. In this study we analysed behaviour-induced activation of the olfactory system, i...
